The reel does not ask for much. The camera is blurry. The frame is split, reen on one side and an FL Studio session on the other, the kind of setup that usually comes with a caption about a first song and a request to be gentle. It reads like a beginning.
Then, about ten seconds in, the beat drops, and the beginning turns out to have been somewhere else entirely.
"wut dat mell" sounds like a song that was worked on for weeks. The video it arrived in looks like it was filmed in one minute. That gap is the whole reason to pay attention.
The first thing you hear clearly is the hook, "how you feeling? alright," sitting under more reverb and delay than most people would risk on a lead vocal. It should be a mistake. The voice is rough at the edges, unpolished in a way that may or may not be on purpose, and the effects stretch it out until it's half vocal and half room. It works. It works because the choices are consistent: the roughness and the wash belong to the same idea, and that idea holds for the whole track. Then he tells his mom he'll be home at 8, answers himself with "that's a lieeee," and it lands twice as hard as the first hook.
The beat has a Memphis lean, but reen doesn't rest on it. Whatever he borrowed from that era, he didn't stop at borrowing.
The reel itself has done the rest. Posted on September 23, it passed 40,000 likes in eleven days. A song presented this plainly is relying on the sound alone. There is no styling to carry it, no video budget, no context. Just a screen recording and a hook that holds up under that kind of exposure, which is a harder test than most songs ever take.
The stripped-down approach is working, and the follower count says as much. It won't work forever. A blurry split screen is a hook the first time and a habit by the fifth, and at some point the visuals will need to catch up with the sound if he wants to keep the crowd he's gathering.
I've heard one song. That isn't enough to say who reen is as an artist, and this isn't an attempt to. It's enough to say that whoever made "wut dat mell" knew what they were doing, even if the reel was dressed to suggest otherwise.
